Fathers Day!

Dads are difficult to buy for.  Do they need the latest tool, golf gadget or thing-a-ma-bob? Do they need a day to themselves or a spa experience?  Likely not.  Dad's are difficult to buy for.  So with Father's Day coming up, give them something they'll treasure forever.  Your little one won't be little for long and you can capture it with the adorable idea.

Book your special Father's Day portrait session and receive a complimentary framed piece! A value of $75

Any man can be a father. It takes someone special to be a dad. ~Author Unknown

Several years ago, my dad handed me and my siblings a newspaper on Father's Day.  "This is what I want too", he said.  As the four of us (myself, my brother and 2 sisters) gathered around the folded up Waterloo Chronicle, we all got teary eyed.  When we were done reading, we didn't say anything, we just hugged him.  Tightly.  Here is a excerpt from that paper:

Wednesday, June, 16, 2010 - What I really want for Father’s Day
...What do I want for Father’s day?
I want to know we did right by you. I know we made mistakes. I want to know they didn’t impact you forever.
I want to know you’re safe and you’re happy. That’s our job as parents when you’re at home. It doesn’t end when you leave.

I try not to inject myself too much into your lives.

You are — or at least should be if we did everything properly — independent women.

But I want to know if what we think, feel or say still means something to you.

Maybe it won’t change your mind about a decision, but perhaps something we say still resonates — and at the very least gives you pause to think.

I respect your right to make your own decision. But I hope you can still benefit from our experience.

What I want more than anything else is to know you’re still good with being my daughter.

I hope this relationship, while it will and should change, still means something important to you.

It’s the kind of gift you can give me all year long.
••• Brian Bourke

My response (and I think I speak for all of us): They don't.  I am.  You don't.  I am (I think so).  It does.  It does. I do.  I definitely am. It really, really does, Dad!

Family life is a bit like a runny peach pie - not perfect but who's complaining? ~Robert Brault

Mother's day was approaching and for some reason I tend to give photography as gifts.  This year was no different.  I contacted my sister-in-law and made arrangements to get the kiddos together for a grandchildren picture for Joe's mom.  I got each of the kids a T-shirt which wasn't too matchy-matchy, but coordinating at the same time.  Photos of the kids can be difficult.  There are 5 of them under the age of 5 and as you can imagine, they get distracted very easily.  With the help of Jeremy and Kelly, we got some amazing and adorable shots.  Here are a few of my faves.

“Tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” ― African Proveb

I decided a month ago that I wanted to organize my workspace. Business has been picking up and I know it's going to take off over the summer months.  So I needed to get myself together and streamline my workflow.  I tend to stare at to-do lists and not know where to start or what to tackle first.  At times I feel overwhelmed by what I need to accomplish (and the little time I have to do it).  Plus I refuse to stay up until 2am editing.  It isn't good for me, my work or my kids.  So when I came across a blog post by another photographer about organizing and making your workspace pretty - I went for it.  I'd still like to add some flowers or something to make me feel like I'm enjoying the outdoors, but it is definitely a start and I'm already working more efficiently. Let me know how you stay organized, I'd love some more tips, tricks and inspiration!

"Do all things with love." Og Mandino

Derek answered the door while his beautiful wife got ready for our session.  The baby was calm, asleep (just how I like it) and comfortable in her new home.  I quickly set up my on-the-go studio, while Derek gazed at his new daughter.  A whole new world has been revealed to Derek and Kristy - through the eyes of their daughter.  The bliss, joy, and love that they never knew possible.  Our newborn session was flawless and a perfect addition to the maternity shoot we had six weeks earlier.  Their little bundle was sound asleep the entire time and happy to let me move her into whatever place I needed to get some amazing shots.

Kristy and Derek,  your daughter is an absolute angel.  It was so wonderful to see you again and photograph your family.  Can't wait to visit in a few months to see how much she has grown and changed!

Please enjoy a few of my favourite shots.  A special thanks to Snicklefritz Knits for the adorable hats and blankets for the shoot.

"I wonder if you smile at my texts, like I smile at yours." ~ Unknown

I recently looked back at a text message I had sent Joe and was a little ashamed.  Since I've been writing the Green Apple Photography blog and now the point.click.change blog, my writing has improved a lot and I'm actually quite proud of it.  So when I read the text, I thought who writes like that?  It doesn't even make sense.  And the worst part is that Joe actually knew what I meant.  I actually send messages like that a lot.  It's faster, easier and well, you know what I mean!

"Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you're up to."

Motherhood has a very humanizing effect. Everything gets reduced to essentials. ~Meryl Streep

As a mom, I'm telling all the dads (and sons & daughters) out there to think of your mom on Sunday.  Really think of her, and thank her.  She has made you who you are today and she is shaping your kids into who they will become.  A mother is tired.  A mother is giving.  A mother is putting herself last.  On Sunday, mom wants to be put first.  And she needs you to be the one to do it, because she won't do it herself.

I have a young family and millions of photos of my kids(I may be exaggerating, but maybe not).  There are very few with me and my kids.  Holding each other.  Laughing together.  Being together.  I'm usually on the other side of the lens.  I get the feeling most moms are.  Dads - give this to your wife.  Grown sons and daughters - give this to your mother.  It's never too late.

How would you feel about a photo of you and your mother, when you were a child?  Do you have many of those? Any? Look at the images below.  How would you feel about it if you were that baby and you were now 5 years old? 15 years old? 25 years old? 55 years old?  It's not just a gift for mom.  It's a gift for your child too!

Having a sister is like having a best friend you can't get rid of. You know whatever you do, they'll still be there. ~Amy Li

I had a trunk full of gear as I drove to my latest shoot - across the street from my mom's house.  Yes I drove 100 meters to a shoot.  I walked up to the front door with armfuls of gear and declared to Jennifer - "don't judge me, I drove here.  From. My. Mom's."  Generously, my mom had offered to watch my 3 monkeys while I spent an hour at her neighbour's place trying to get B to stay put and T to smile.  Thank you mom!

Jennifer and Caroline, thank you for letting me crash your weekly play-date.  I think the effort you make to see each other nearly every week (unless there is a risk of inclement weather) is fantastic.  Your children are adorable, and will grow up not only as cousins, but as wonderful friends.

Please enjoy a few of my favourites from your session.
